The Constructed Balaclava is built rather than simply shaped.

Its surface develops through repeating hand-crocheted units, assembled to create a rhythmic geometry across the head and neck. Triangular tensions emerge through the construction, giving the piece structure and visual direction while allowing the softness of merino and alpaca to remain present.

Colour, crochet direction and density shift across the surface. What appears irregular is deliberate: harmony is created through variation rather than perfect symmetry. In selected areas, additional yarn is worked directly into the crochet, adding depth and reinforcing the dialogue between precision and imperfection, openness and density.

The face and neck are framed with hand-knitted finishes, creating softer, flexible transitions against the body. A handmade cord introduces another functional element, allowing the silhouette to be adjusted and changing the relationship between coverage and exposure.

Every stage of the construction remains visible. Differences in tension, texture and placement are preserved rather than concealed, allowing the process of making to become part of the finished piece.

Sitting between accessory and wearable object, the Constructed Balaclava reflects an essential Ebru Gurlek idea: structure does not have to mean rigidity, and irregularity does not mean accident.

The Constructed Balaclava may be recreated in limited quantities, but never identically. Variations in colour placement, tension, texture and the decisions made during construction give each piece its own individual character.
